Sputnik

Sputnik the canyon bat came into the rescue with a badly infected wound to his forearm. After several weeks of medication and physical therapy, his arm healed and he is pain-free and mobile. His injuries keep him from flying, even after they healed, so he will stay with us. Sputnik is 200 grams of personality in a teensie 3.5 gram body. Don't let his little size fool you, he is fearless and doesn't hesitate to let us know what he needs. Sputnik is housed with several Mexican free-tailed bats and is often found cuddling with them. 

About Canyon bats

Canyon bats are the smallest bats in the United States. In Arizona, they weigh between 3 and 4 grams. For context, a Hershy's Kiss weighs 4 grams!
These tiny dynamos are about the size of an adult thumb with a wingspan averaging 8 inches. Canyon bats tend to have feisty personalities and far more swagger than their tiny size might warrant.  Like all bats in Arizona they give birth once a year in the summer. They tend to have twins and their babies are less than 2 grams when they are born.  They are insectivore bats and eat small night-flying bugs.
