Fezzik before
Fezzik now
Fezzik the big brown bat came to Arizona Bat Rescue as a malnourished and underweight neonatal pup. Pups are incredibly fragile at the stage before they are furred and even moreso when they are underweight. Like all pups his age, Fezzik needed to be fed approximately every 3 hours around the clock. Fezzik had a strong will to live and gradually gained weight and stregnth. We supported him through every stage of his development and when he was old enough, we encouraged him to fly in our flight house. Finally when he was a full, strong adult, we released him back into the wild. Fezzik was a very special bat and we miss him but we are so happy he is flying free.
About Big Brown bats
Big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) are an insectivore bat common in Arizona. They are larger than a lot of bats in Arizona, weighing 15-26g (0.5-0.9 oz) with a wingspan of approximately 12 inches. Their color ranges from medium golden brown to dark reddish brown. They have strong jaws and relatively large teeth in order to eat their diet of multiple kinds of flying insects including tough-shelled beetles. Big brown bats have a lot of personality and are social even with their caregivers.
